Our creative designer, Jessica, is now offering private sewing lessons for children ages 7 and up in the comfort of your home! We offer a modern and upbeat approach to sewing at an affordable rate, and we bring the machine you! Our lessons are project based. We offer a relaxed learning environment, individualized attention, and we promote a “can-do” attitude where students can express their ideas.
Instructor background:
In addition to co-owning Three Purple Pigs, Jessica Harris is a certified K-8 public education teacher with a junior high/middle school education degree. Jessica uses her teaching experience during instruction by developing organized, creative, engaging, hands-on lesson plans for each private session. She has been sewing as a hobby since she was young, and expanded her hobby into a business when Three Purple Pigs was formed in June 2007.
Lesson rates:
Phoenix, Ahwatukee, Chandler, Tempe, Mesa
$30.00 per hour for 1 child
$50.00 per hour for 2 children
$75.00 per hour for 3 children
Minimum of 2 hours per lesson
Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Gilbert, Queen Creek, Maricopa *additional charge covers fuel, mileage, and driving time.
$40.00 per hour for 1 child
$60.00 per hour for 2 children
$85.00 per hour for 3 children
Minimum of 2 hours per lesson
To schedule private lessons:
Contact Three Purple Pigs by phone (602-380-6616) or email (info@threepurplepigs.com) to set up your lesson time. We will contact you within 24 hours to arrange dates and times. At that time you will need to either send a check or pay your deposit online at www.threepurplepigs.com. Private instruction is scheduled based upon instructor availability and is scheduled Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings between 6:00pm and 9:00pm or on select weekends between 8:00am and 12:00pm. If you have specific circumstances that require different days or times, please discuss this with us as we may be able to accommodate your needs.
Structure of lessons:
Typically, four lessons are necessary for a child to learn basic sewing skills and possibly complete a project. However, you can choose as many lessons as you like. Lessons are designed based on the child’s skill level. In general, children will learn basic sewing machine set up and care, threading the machine, winding bobbins, stitch widths, lengths, and patterns. The children will practice straight stitching seams, zig-zag stitches, overlock stitches, back stitching, and seam allowances. They will continue learning sewing techniques such as pinning, cutting, and sewing from basic patterns while completing simple sewing projects at each lesson.
Responsibility of materials:
We bring the sewing machine to you, unless you prefer to use your own machine. We will bring general sewing supplies needed for instruction (fabric swatches, scissors, pins, ruler, marking pens etc…) You are responsible for providing the fabric, notions, and pattern for a project if your child chooses to incorporated that into their private lessons. The instructor will provide guidance and a list of recommended supplies for the project/s the child will complete prior to the first lesson.
Payment details:
A non-refundable pre-payment equal to one hour of instruction is required to hold your lesson time. This deposit will be applied to your first lesson and the remaining fee is payable by cash, check or credit card at the end of each lesson. For the initial deposit you can pay be credit/debit or e-check through paypal. If you prefer you can pay for the deposit by check. All checks can be made payable to “Three Purple Pigs” and sent to:

Cancellations and Refunds:
We take our responsibility seriously for timely and professional instruction. Please be respectful of the instructor’s and other students’ time. Regardless of when you arrive for your scheduled appointment, private instruction commences at the appointed time, and is billed based upon the start of the scheduled appointment. Should you need to reschedule, 24-hour notice is required. Without 24-hour notice, deposits will not be refunded. Refunds are only given in extreme cases. If you are unable to make the lesson and contact us at least three days in advance, we may be able to reschedule your lesson to another time.
